Southampton's last match was on Saturday, a 1-1 draw against Huddersfield Town, with Adam Armstrong getting the goal for the Saints.
City beat Middlesbrough 3-2 last time out, also on Saturday, with Mark Sykes, Taylor Gardner-Hickman and Tommy Conway on the scoresheet.
Wednesday's match will be refereed by Keith Stroud, who has taken charge of eight Championship games so far this season, issuing one red card and booking 46 players. He has not awarded any penalties.
The last City game Stroud refereed was the 2-1 loss away at Leeds United on October 7. He is yet to oversee a match featuring Southampton this season.
